With extremely limited Alaska state public safety officers in rural Alaska, tribes are increasingly interested in developing and enforcing public safety laws. This class provides sample tribal public safety code that can be modified and used by Alaska tribes.

Through the lens of exercising tribal civil jurisdiction, Alaska tribal governance expert Lisa Jaeger* will explore implementing and enforcing tribal public safety codes. We'll take a look at the establishment of a tribal department of public safety and various ways cases may be referred to tribal court, alcohol and drug regulation, disorderly conduct, theft, vandalism, juvenile status offenses, and other regulatory topics. Plus, we'll review various tribal-state agreements and restorative justice through treatment and sentencing circles.
