Today the Community Health Representative (CHR) is the link between the family and the clinic in many tribal communities. As the American Indian (AI) population ages, the CHR is providing services to many people who are experiencing the side effects of cancer, heart disease and diabetes - the top three causes of death of American Indians according to the Indian Health Service. This means that as a CHR, you need to know wellness strategies that you can share with the family members to help them stay healthy longer.

This class will provide you with in-depth information about how to take better care of yourself while taking care of others. Weíll examine recommended timetables for early detection screening, discuss preventative actions that you can teach to your clients and patients, and learn of other resources for health education about these three diseases in Native communities - including resources for support for patients, and how to establish a cancer survivorís support group.
